The son of the legendary Dublin fan Tony Broughan, known as Molly Malone, is hosting a charity event to celebrate the third anniversary of his father’s passing and also to encourage young people to get into sports.
Tony was known to many Croke Park and Parnell Park regulars and he attended Dublin games for 80 years up and down the country. But it was his exploits dressed in his sky blue and navy Molly Malone costume and wig as far back as 1975 that made him stand out.
The Cabra man was seen and heard for decades on Hill 16 with his iconic bell getting the crowd going. When Covid came, Tony was heartbroken. His son Terry said: “Covid came in, you can’t play in Covid. He lived for football matches.
“We all looked after him, but when he got told there were no matches on, he just got worked up, had a heart attack and he says ‘no point to living, you can't go out and enjoy yourself, what's the point of being around?’”

Tony passed away on September 2, 2020. Now Terry is the one keeping alive his late father's iconic Molly Malone legacy.
The event in his memory will be at the Naomh Fionnbarra GAA Club, Cabra on September 9. It will start with a blessing and a few stories about the legend as people remember him.
Kildare Singer Pat Adams and cabaret singer Tommy Carey will be performing and a few special guests might make surprise appearances. There will be finger food as well.
There will also be a fundraiser for the Capuchin Day Centre and The Society of St Vincent de Paul. The event will also highlight how important it is to encourage young people to get off the streets and take up sport – any sport, but Terry remarks that “GAA’s the best sport”.
GAA also helped Tony’s son when he was younger. He said: “GAA kept me out of trouble, and nowadays it would keep kids away from trouble.”
The event will start at 7pm but doors will open at 6:30pm. Tickets are €12 and can be purchased from Terry Broughan on 087809 5913. The event is free for children. Donations for the charities can be made at the door.
