Christmas party season is now in full swing and demand for taxis around the city is sure to be high for the next few weeks.

But catching a cab isn't the only way to get home from a night out in town, with a number of public transport options available.

Transport for Ireland have published a list of the current Christmas timetables for Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and Bus Eireann services.

There may be further updates in the coming weeks but below are the latest timetable arrangements for Christmas 2019.

Dublin Bus

The Christmas Nitelink service will operate on the following dates in December:

  • Thursday, 5, Friday, 6, Saturday, 7
  • Thursday, 12, Friday, 13, Saturday, 14
  • Wednesday, 18, Thursday, 19, Friday, 20, Saturday, 21
  • Friday, 27, Saturday, 28, Tuesday, 31 (New Year’s Eve)

The services will depart from Westmoreland Street & D’Olier Street and costs €4.50 when using a Leap Card. 

Nitelink prepaid tickets costing €6.60 are available from city centre ticket agents or by pay with coins only on the bus.

DART and Commuter Rail

Late-night services will serve all stations on DART, Dundalk, Maynooth and Kildare Commuter lines, including Pearse to Kildare via Phoenix Park Tunnel on selected nights in December.

Christmas Timetable, Late night DART and Commuter services are back for the weekends in the run-up to Christmas and after the city's New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Late night services will operate on:

Fridays and Saturdays; 6 and 7, 13 and 14, 20 and  21 December

 

Maynooth Commuter

  • 00:20hrs and 01.55hrs Dublin Pearse serving all stations to Maynooth

Kildare Phoenix Park Tunnel  services

  • 00:50hrs and 01.50hrs from Dublin Pearse serving Tara Street, Dublin Connolly, Drumcondra, and all stations from ParkWest Cherryorchard  to Kildare

Dundalk Commuter

  • 00:40hrs and 01.40hrs from Dublin Pearse serving Tara Street, Dublin Connolly and all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk

DART services

  • 00:30hrs and 01.30hrs from Dublin Connolly serving all stations to Greystones
  • 00:30hrs  and 01.30hrs from Dublin Pearse serving all stations to Howth

Tuesday 31st December to Early Morning Wednesday 1st January

  • Late-night services will operate after Dublin’s New Year celebrations. These services will have security personnel on them to ensure passenger safety

Services During Christmas Holidays:

Christmas Eve:

    • Regular Intercity timetable until 21:00hrs with a few alterations
    • Commuter services will operate on a Sunday timetable until 21:00hrs

Christmas Day and Stephen’s Day – No service will operate across the network

27th to 31st December:

    • Normal services will operate on Intercity with a few alterations
    • Commuter services will operate on a Saturday timetable

Services for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day:

New Year’s Eve:

  • Regular Intercity timetable until 21:00hrs with a few alterations
  • Commuter services will operate on a Saturday timetable until 21:00hrs
  • Late-night services will operate after Dublin’s New Year celebrations

New Year’s Day:

  • DART and Commuter services will operate on a Sunday timetable
  • Intercity services will  operate on a weekday timetable with a few alterations

Luas

Night Luas trams will run until the early hours on the Red and Green lines on Friday 13, Saturday 14, Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Tuesday 31 December. Night Luas trams will run in both directions collecting passengers at all stops on the Green Line and Red Line. However, the last Night Luas trams will only run out of the city centre.

  • Night Luas on Fri 13 Dec at 01:00, 02:00 & 03:00
  • Night Luas on Sat 14 Dec at 01:00, 02:00 & 03:00
  • Night Luas on Fri 20 Dec at 01:00, 02:00 & 03:00
  • Night Luas on Sat 21 Dec at 01:00, 02:00 & 03:00
  • Night Luas on NYE Tues 31 Dec at 01:00, 02:00 & 03:00

The last tram will run out of the City Centre only from The Point to Tallaght.

Night Luas Red Line Westbound from The Point to Saggart 

  • Night Luas on Fri 13 Dec at 01:30 & 02:30
  • Night Luas on Sat 14 Dec at 01:30 & 02:30
  • Night Luas on Fri 20 Dec at 01:30 & 02:30

Night Luas Fares

  • A validated Leap Card, valid Night Luas ticket, valid commuter ticket or validated Public Service Card with Free Travel is required to use Night Luas.
  • For the best price use Leap Card. Night Luas costs €4 with Leap Card. Don’t forget to Touch On & Off your Leap Card to get the best value.
  • A Night Luas ticket costs €5 from a Luas Ticket Machine.
  • Luas Annual, Monthly and 30 Day tickets are valid on Night Luas services.

Last Luas Trams

Regular Luas services have quite late operating hours so Luas is a good option for late night shopping and entertainment over the Christmas season any night.

  • Last tram from The Point is at 00:30 Mon – Fri, 00:30 Sat & 23:30 Sun
  • Last tram from Connolly is at 19:31 Mon – Fri, 18:39 Sat and 19:03 Sun to Red Cow but later trams serve Busáras (c.200m walk)
  • Last tram from Saggart is at 23:52 Mon – Sat & 22:51 Sun
  • Last tram from Tallaght is at 00:00 Mon – Sat & 23:00 Sun
  • Last tram from Broombridge is at 00:17 Mon – Sat & 23:17 Sun
  • Last tram from Brides Glen is at 00:00 Mon – Sat & 23:00 Sun

Christmas & New Year Services December 2019

The following Luas services will operate over the Christmas and New Year period.

  • Christmas Eve Tues 24 Dec: Services end at 20:00

  • Christmas Day Wed 25 Dec : No Luas services

  • St. Stephen’s Day Thurs 26 Dec: Services running 09:00 – 23:30 with Sunday frequency

  • Fri 27 Dec: Services running Saturday operating hours & frequency

  • Sat 28 Dec: Services running Saturday operating hours & frequency

  • Sun 29 Dec: Services running Sunday operating hours & frequency

  • Mon 30 Dec: Services running Saturday operating hours & frequency

  • NYE Tues 31 Dec: Services running Saturday operating hours & frequency plus Night Luas

  • Bk Hol Wed 1 Jan: Services running Sunday operating hours & frequency

  • Thurs 2 Jan: Regular weekday services resume

Bus Eireann

Until 2100, all services will be running to a normal timetable, although the following Expressway services will not operate on 24 December:

  • Route X1 – 1945 Belfast-Dublin
  • Route 2 – 2100 Dublin Airport-Wexford; 1830 & 2030 Wexford-Dublin Airport
  • Route 4 – 2000 Waterford-Dublin
  • Route 23 – 2000 Dublin-Sligo
  • Route 32 – 2045 Dublin-Letterkenny; 1945 Letterkenny-Dublin
  • Route 100X – 2030 Dundalk-Dublin
  • Route 871/890 – Eurolines services to and from London

Services due to start after 2100 will not be running on 24 December, although the following Expressway services will be running normally:

  • Route 4 – 2200 Dublin Airport-Waterford
  • Route 30 – 2130 Dublin-Donegal
  • Route 100X – 2140 Dublin-Dundalk

25 December 2019

No services

26 December 2019

All services will operate to a Sunday timetable, although the following Sunday Expressway services will not be running on 26 December:

  • Route X1 – 1815, 2015, 2115, 2215 & 2315 Dublin-Belfast; 0530, 1945 & 2200 Belfast-Dublin
  • Route X2A – 1015, 1615, 1715 & 1915 Dublin-Belfast; 0645 & 1445 Belfast-Dublin
  • Route X5 – 0930, 1130, 1330, 1530, 1730 & 1930 Dublin-Newry; 0815 & 1015 Belfast-Dublin; 0915 Belfast-Newry; 0715, 1315, 1515 & 1715 Newry-Dublin
  • Route 32 – 0030 Letterkenny-Dublin

There will also be additional services on 26 December on the following Expressway routes:

  • Route X1 – 0445 Belfast-Dublin; 1715 & 1915 Dublin-Belfast

27to 30 December 2019

All services will be running to a normal timetable

31 December 2019

Until 2200, all services will be running to a normal timetable, although the following Expressway services will not be running on 31 December:

  • 871/890 – Eurolines services to and from London

All services due to start after 2200 will not be running on 31 December, although the following services will be running normally:

  • All Expressway services

1 January 2020

All services will operate to a Sunday timetable.
