Celebrations were in full swing as Dublin's Hindu temple was vibrantly decorated for one of the biggest Indian festivals.
Ireland's Hindu community came together to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi at the Vedic Hindu Cultural Centre of Ireland in Ballymount. The celebrations were hosted by the Bihar Jharkhand Association of Ireland (BJAI) on September 23, 2023.
BJAI founder Rakesh Kumar Shekhar said: "The event was a vibrant and joyous occasion that showcased the rich cultural heritage of Bihar and Jharkhand while fostering a sense of togetherness among the Indian diaspora in Ireland." Ganesh Chaturthi is hosted in honour of the Hindu god, Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune.

Mr Shekhar said: "[We] took it upon ourselves to bring this grand celebration to Dublin, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the festivities back home. It not only provided an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate their cultural heritage but also served as a bridge to introduce the rich traditions of Bihar and Jharkhand to the people of Ireland."
A beautifully decorated idol of Lord Ganesha stood atop a shrine adorned with flowers, lights, and vibrant colours. Mr Shekhar said: "It was a great time for families and friends to bond, celebrate, and strengthen their cultural roots."
People who attended the celebrations were treated to mouthwatering delicacies such as puri, sabji, kadi, rice and the delectable halwa (sweets) that are an integral part of the festivities. Mr Shekhar continued: "The success of the Ganesh Puja celebration was a testament to the unity and resilience of the Indian diaspora in Ireland. It not only provided an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate their cultural heritage but also served as a bridge to introduce the rich traditions of Bihar and Jharkhand to the people of Ireland."
Mr Shekhar went on to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who helped make the event a great success.
