If you are looking for a Halloween-worthy haunt this October, Eleanora’s Bar and Lounge on Drimnagh Road might be the perfect place.
Not only is the pub a great place to have a drink or grab a bite to eat, but it is named after Eleanora Barnwall, the late 16th century spirit that is said to haunt Drimnagh Castle.
Eleanora had a very Romeo and Juliet-like story - bethrothed to her cousin Edmund Barnwall, she was actually in love with Sean O’Byrne of the O’Byrne Clan of Wicklow, a sworn enemy of the Barnwalls and all other Norman families. On the way to the wedding ceremony, Edmund’s coach was attacked by Sean O’Byrne and his followers - Edmund was killed but in the battle that followed, so was Sean.

After that, Eleanora was forbidden from leaving the castle. However, she managed to escape and found her way to Sean’s grave in the Dublin Mountains where she stayed until the harsh weather claimed her. Eleanora’s sad apparition is said to have been seen many times wandering the castle in search of her love.
If you’re ever visiting Drimangh Castle looking to catch a glimpse of her ghost, Eleanora’s pub is a must-visit for post-spooky experience pints - it's only an eight-minute walk away from the castle. But the venue is also great for casual lunch, nights out with friends and game nights.
Eleanora’s has an extensive pub grub menu and regular live entertainment. They have live cover bands, trad sessions and late night DJ events, as well as music quizzes, karaoke and bingo nights.
All major sport events are shown on their many plasma screens or HD projector – from the Champions League and Euro Qualifiers to the Six Nations and All Ireland Championships.
The pub has 4.4 out of 5 starts on Google Reviews, praising the “amazing” food and the “ very nice, bright and warm” atmosphere.
