We’re all looking for ways to relax and de-stress at the minute, so perhaps a 3D sound bath could be just the thing you’re looking for.
In a world first, The Space Between – a yoga, meditation and event space on Fenian Street in Dublin 2 – will be hosting an online sound bath on Sunday evening using ‘binaural’ 3D sound – sign up, strap on your headphones and drift away.
Dave Smith from the centre explains, “Sound baths take you through the frequencies, to a deeply meditative and relaxed state.
“It'll affect different people in different ways but it will be a very pleasant, enjoyable journey. The frequencies will put your brain in a very relaxed mode – what you would get from a deep meditation, or that lovely hit you get after a rigorous exercise.”
The Space Between has hosted several sound baths before in the venue, organised by sound artist and sound therapist Chloe McHugh.
At one of the events she got talking to Simon Cullen, a musician with the band Ships who was responsible for designing and building The Space Between’s audiophile sound system.
“They connected over talking about sounds and frequencies and all that kind of stuff,” says Dave, “They're down the rabbit-hole.”
As soon as the lockdown was imposed, Dave was trying to figure out how to take some of The Space Between’s usual events and workshops online. A sound bath entails more than just a Zoom call, with audio quality being paramount, which is where Simon got involved.

“We were looking at experiences,” Dave explains. “Anything that could add to the calming, healing vibe, which was going to be so needed and required.
“I got onto Simon about it and he came back to me with this set-up – it's a binaural microphone.
“You basically have a dummy head with what looks like human ears. In that are two microphones, and they capture sound exactly how it would work in a human head.
“They manage to broadcast that back out in the exact same way, so when you listen to the broadcast on headphones, it's like you're in the room. It goes right through your head, it's incredible.
“I'm very excited - it's an idea we had on the week of lockdown and now it's happening. For something to emerge as a thought and then manifest in the real world is special."
The event is on Sunday 17th May at 8pm. Tickets for the online experience cost €15, though HSE and frontline workers can claim free passes, and there is also an option to pay what you can if you are under financial strain from Covid-19. Sign up here.
You are advised to use good quality headphones or stereo speakers to get the most out of it. The Sound Bath is not suitable for anyone with a pacemaker or epilepsy, and pregnant women are advised to contact The Space Between directly for guidance.
