Ministers held a special ‘incorporeal’ Cabinet meeting yesterday to approve bumper relief payments for homes and businesses devastated by recent floods.
It came as the cleanups after Storm Babet and Storm Ciaran continued with estimates that the total damages left in the storms’ wake has passed at least €100 million. Businesses who are fighting to survive after being hit by the terrible weather can now avail of grants worth up to €100,000 each.
However, Labour TD for Dublin Bay North, Aodhan O Riordain, has condemned the Government’s “double standard” on flood compensation because areas in North Dublin, his constituency, have been excluded from the scheme.

He said: “Compensation for the homes and businesses devastated by flooding in Cork and Louth is to be welcomed. But it is important to ask, why are houses in North Dublin not eligible for the same compensation when they are impacted by flood damage?
“I raised the issue of flooding in my constituency with An Taoiseach and the Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphries, a couple of weeks ago to no avail. It is simply not fair that people in North Dublin who have had their homes damaged by flooding are not eligible for the same compensation, this is a double standard that must end.”
Ministers made the decision to extend two schemes to businesses in Louth and Wexford hit by flooding between October 24 and November 5.
