Irish foods are best enjoyed in the Autumn and Winter months.
That is because they are truly wholesome and heartwarming. From stew to colcannon to many other Irish favorites, Irish food is known to comfort, especially after a long, cold day. And Irish soda bread is no exception.
The smell of freshly baked Irish soda bread is something that brings me ultimate comfort, and I know I'm in for a treat when the aroma touches my nose. It's no wonder why I continued to enjoy into adulthood, making it just how my mother did.

And perhaps the best part about it is that it is pretty easy to make. It's a simple mix-and-bake method with not many other steps involved.
This gorgeous, salty, and hearty Irish soda bread is a great autumnal comfort. While I mostly opt for butter and jam when enjoying this delicacy, it goes excellently with a nice bowl of hot soup or even stew during the colder months of the year.
Here are all of the ingredients you will need:
- 10oz wholemeal flour
- 6oz plain flour
- 3/4 pint buttermilk
- 1 tsp bread soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp Irish butter
Here is the simple method to follow:
- Preheat your oven to 190°C/gas mark 5/374°F
- Mix all of the dry ingredients in a bowl
- Mix in the butter
- Mix in the buttermilk. Your dough should turn out soft and slightly sticky
- Line a baking tin with butter and place your dough in the tin
- Bake in the middle of your oven for 40 minutes
- Once it has baked, take it out of the tin and leave it on a cooling rack for around 20-30 minutes
- Cut into slices and serve with butter and jam
The recipe is simple yet the payoff is excellent. If you are looking for some true Irish comfort this Fall and Winter, we recommend putting this one into your bank of recipes.
